Bar Review: Lady Di

Lady Di pub MaltaTucked away in one of the back streets of Sliema you can stumble upon the Lady Di pub.  It is a British pub, if the name hadn’t made that clear enough for you, and has a sort of musty end of Empire feel about it.  Except not that impressive Victorian British empire, more like that grim 1980’s Maggie Thatcher, Falklands and Royal wedding sort of a period.
I visited the place solely out of curiosity and because I had an hour to kill on a Wednesday afternoon, so probably not fair to judge it on such a basis.  So I will anyway.

There were two older gents there at the time, plus the barman, with me reading the Malta Times at a table adorned by a Cisk.  The older gents and barman were perched in different parts of the bar in a sort of loose isosceles triangle formation, and conducting a conversation (in English) about some people they knew.  Nothing very interesting if you are not familiar with the people in question.  I astutely surmised that they were regulars, but as older men in pubs tend to do in these situations, they sat on stools quite distant from one another.  Tennis was being played on the TV with sound muted, to which nobody was paying any attention.  In fairness, I struggle to think of any occasion where the habitues of a boozer were fixated by tennis matches on the screen – it’s the wrong sport for a pub.

So that was it.  If you want to check it out for yourself, it’s near the Tigne shopping centre and despite my less than rave review is a perfectly decent place to sit down for a chat and a beer.
