Best Full English in Malta? – U Bistrot (St Julian’s)

I went into U Bistrot confidently, ready to award the gold star for best English breakfast in Malta before I’d even tasted it.

The place looks great: chilled out and tastefully decorated, artesan products artfully displayed around the place.  And the price of €8.50 suggested a premium breakfasting experience.  They’ve gone for that ‘classy-restaurant’ thing of serving food on a roof-tile, which looks pretty good I guess, although seems a shame not to use perfectly good plates if you’ve got them.

Sadly, this is not an award-winning breakfast.  Nice Maltese sausage (just the one), bacon’s pretty good, but eggs slightly burnt and you’re fooling no-one by covering up the plate with pieces of toast.  Now it is really nice, and good English style tea along with it, but doesn’t quite reach the heights I’m afraid.

Seems like a great place for lunch, but not quite as good as I expected it to be for breakfast.

  1. Hmm…not too sure about the roof tile. Call me old fashioned but a full English just ain’t a full English unless it’s on a proper plate. I like my crockery to come from Villeroy & Boch, not B&Q.

    1. No, I’m not crazy about that ‘food:roofing products’ combination that some restaurants are so keen on. They do a good breakfast in this place though – even better in hindsight compared to some of the pretty rubbish ones I’ve had since. The ‘U Bistrot’ breakfast is definitely in the top 3 or 4 of those that I’ve tried.
