Upon hearing of this temple site and glancing at a couple of photos, I had a picture in my mind of something resembling the Stonehenge models designed for the band Spinal Tap. In case you’ve forgotten, there was some confusion over the symbols for ‘feet’ and ‘inches’, resulting in a rather smaller than expected replica.
As bassist Derek Smalls put it when challenged as to the quality of the show which followed: “I do not, for one, think that the problem was that the band was down. I think that the problem may have been… that there was a Stonehenge monument on the stage that was in danger of being crushed by a dwarf.“It’s a very funny movie. If you haven’t seen it before, then stop reading this and go off and find it.
All this is by way of saying, I had low expectations for the Bugibba temple site. Especially when I saw it described as a ‘minor site’, and that the capstone of the dolmen was ‘replaced in modern times’. To me that suggested the foreman involved in constructing the Dolmen hotel nudging the forklift operator to ‘stick that stone on top of those two other stones’ and thus enhance the appearance of the place. Perhaps I am just too cynical.
So anyway we went along, through the foyer of the aforementioned Dolmen hotel towards the swimming pools, as this is the only way to get to the temple. And it’s actually not too bad. Worth a wander if you’re in the vicinity, as at least it provides a photo-op standing next to something that’s four and a half thousand years old. Which is more or less the same age as Stonehenge.
