Gluten-Free in Malta

Here in the western world, it seems like allergies of various kinds are on the rise.  And no, it’s not because ‘young folk are softer than when I were a lad…’,  scientific studies seem to back this up.  Maybe it’s because of the amount of chemicals we come into contact with every day.  Or due to the fact that we eat such a wide variety of foods from around the globe.  In the case of gluten allergies, there’s a theory that that whole Neolithic period when people started growing crops and eating dairy products may have resulted in our digestive systems becoming somewhat messed up.  It could be all or none of those things.  I don’t know, because in spite of what you may imagine, I am not a scientist.

However as Danya suffers from this particular affliction, we generally keep an eye out for gluten-free products.  Luckily enough, Malta has quite a surprisingly decent variety of options readily available.  Supermarkets like Scotts and Carrefour stock the Schar range of G.F. foods, and a lot of restaurants offer gluten-free options on their menus.  We plan to check them out at some stage, so be on your guard St Paul’s Area Gluten Friendly Restaurants – (you know who you are).

Finding gluten-free beer is a rather more difficult task, although of course there is plenty of cheap wine to be found here in the Med.  We managed to get Estrella rice beer in Carrefour, which is very low in gluten – so that was a start.  But then today in one of the back streets of Qawra we found a mini-market selling Greene’s gluten free lager and ales.
Cue one happy Brazilian.

If you’re looking for this magical shop, it’s called ‘Habit’s Cash & Carry’, and you will find it very near The Bugibba Hotel, on the corner of Triq Ic-Cern and Triq it-Turisti.

Or you could just try Carrefour, as they seem to be stocking the same range of G-F beers now too.
