Hallowe’en in Malta

Halloween in Malta 2014

As with much of Europe, Hallowe’en is becoming ever more popular as an excuse for otherwise sensible people to get dressed up in ridiculous fashion and go out to party.

When I was growing up this was a festival purely for the kids.  We were dressed up as home-made ghosts or goblins and sent off in groups along the country roads near my Aunt’s house, effectively to beg for sweets and chocolate.  Or apples and nuts, if you were unfortunate enough to be given these wretched substitutes.

Today Malta embraces Hallowe’en and all it’s wicked ways, and here are a few of the entertaining options available to celebrate the big day:

The kids still get a look in here in Malta, as Baystreet demonstrate with their assault on the younger market.  And somewhat unexpected venues like Popeye Village and the National Aquarium are also dressing up for Hallowe’en.

But there are even more options for the adults who like to let their hair down and go all ghoulish and monstrous for the weekend:

The Grand Excelsior Hotel offers a spooky buffet for kids of all ages on their version of the Flying Dutchman.

Zion Reggae Bar in Marsaskala are having a Hallowe’en Ball, although probably best to leave the kids at home for this one.

Same goes for clubbing events like Sound Salon, The Halloween Revelry in St Julian’s and the ominously named Halloween Techno Massacre in San Gwann’s Liquid Club.

You could also venture into the Haunted House at Eden Cinemas in Paceville, although unfortunately critically acclaimed chiller ‘The Babadook’ won’t be in Maltese cinemas in time for Hallowe’en.  Or quite possibly ever.

Whether you decide to try any of the above, or to simply pull down the blinds and watch scary movies to drown out the sound of kids knocking on your door, I hope it’s a suitably horrific weekend.
