How to get a TEFL Qualification in Malta

In order to teach English in Malta, you’ve got to have a certificate from a recognised school stating that you’ve completed an EFL course of at least 60 hours in length.   So why not kill two birds with one stone, and come out here to get your qualification before (hopefully) starting work in a school

And doing the course over here gives you an instant contact with the school where you take it.

The following schools offer courses of 60 hours (induction courses) and are all recognised by the Maltese department of education at time of writing:

  • ACE English
  • Chamber College
  • EASY School of Languages
  • EC Malta
  • EF Malta
  • ELA Malta
  • Inlingua Malta
  • Maltalingua
  • NSTS
  • Skylark School of English

CELTA Courses are the industry standard, they take 4 weeks (full-time) to complete and are the equivalent of 120 hours teacher training.  These are accepted everywhere in the world, and with one of these under your belt getting a teaching permit here in Malta is just a formality.  It will also make it a lot easier to find a teaching job out here, but you have to weigh that against the time and money it’s going to cost you to do the course.

You can do CELTA courses at these schools:

  • LAL Malta (IELS)
  • NSTS

The induction courses will cost you about €300 or so, while to do the CELTA will set you back about €1,350 or more.  Take your pick.

I did a CELTA course at IELS, and it was very professionally organised.  Some people get stressed about such things, and overly-concerned about failing, but really it’s not so bad.  My experience was that unless you drop out or your English is very poor indeed, you’re not going to fail.  It gets a bit trickier to score the higher grades, but the vast majority of people will pass this course.

The DELTA qualification is for those wanting to go to the next level, such as Director of Studies at a language school.  IELS school in Sliema also offer these courses – expect to pay €3,000 plus.

This post gives a little more info on what you need to do to teach in Malta.
Enjoy..

  1. Hi, do you need to be multi lingual to teach English as a foreign language?

    Many thanks

    Scott.

    1. Nope, just fluent at English. You don’t need to be able to speak one word of another language.

  2. Thanks! A client has asked if I would do a research trip to Malta for his business, and I was thinking of staying for 5-6 weeks and doing a CELTA cert. You have great timing in your posts!

  3. Hi, my boyfriend and I are looking into moving to Malta, he completed a TEFL course in Ireland and has been to Vietnam for six months teaching English. Are there many jobs available in this area and what is the process for getting registered in Malta?

Any advice would be amazing… thanks!!

    1. You need to do a separate Malta TEFL as well as an english test (TELT) unless you have an English A-level. If you want a TEFL course (normally about 230) I’m selling mine as no longer need it.

  4. Selling a Malta EC TEFL course ticket!

the course is Ministry of Education certified and I’m selling it cheaply as I no longer can do it!

    email me!

  5. Hello!
Does the TEFL test have to be taken in Malta, or can the applicants take the test in the country they are currently living?

    Jasmin

  6. Hi, I would like to ask if I still need to an extra Tefl Test in Malta if I already have an English A level ? Can I start looking for Jobs in this area ? Last question, which grade is accepted for the English A level qualification?
