The Limestone Heritage Park & Gardens in Siggiewi are a celebration of the very stone from which pretty much all of Malta is built. From ancient megalithic tombs to that ugly apartment building that was thrown up a couple of years ago, just about every building on the island has been hewn out of dusty limestone.
At the Limestone Heritage Park they offer a walking audio-visual tour which takes you through Malta’s ancient history, and then concludes with a demonstration of stone carving. In fact the Park is located within what used to be a limestone quarry, so it’s about as authentic as it gets. You can check out some of the tools that were used to carve this malleable rock, and some of the sculptures produced by various artists are dotted around the gardens.
There’s also a small animal park featuring goats and donkeys and various birds, and the gardens themselves are quite nice to stroll around.
The Limestone Heritage Park is promoting itself as a destination for weddings, so maybe check it out if you’re planning on getting hitched in Malta.
Now I have to tell you that the park is quite out of the way, and unless you’ve got a car the hop-on/off bus is the likeliest way you’re going to end up here. I guess you’ll know yourself if this is likely to be the kind of attraction which you will enjoy visiting.
It’s not for everyone, but it does provide an insight into the building blocks of this island and its rich history.
