Malta National Aquarium

Malta’s national aquarium opened in 2013, so it really shouldn’t have taken us this long to pay a visit. However another grey and rainy day provided the excuse for a weekend visit to look at fish.

I should start by saying that I am a fan of aquariums, having visited the Australian, Malaysian and Portuguese versions, among others.  Those three set the bar pretty high though, and the Maltese aquarium is operating on a much smaller scale.

The building itself is a nice addition to the coastline of Qawra, a futuristic starfish which doesn’t detract from the surrounding greens and blues.  And once inside – for the not too cheap price of €12.90 a ticket – you are free to wander through various sections themed on different parts of Malta.

Sharks and rays are the stars of the tanks here, with a supporting cast made up of eels, clownfish and more. If there were any jellyfish knocking about then I confess that I didn’t see them, although it would be a surprise if they didn’t feature given that they are more or less taking over the oceans these days.  Seahorses also feature on the website, but must’ve been hiding when we paid a visit.

So is it worth parting with your euros?

It’s not one of the planet’s great aquariums and lacks an interactive element, but yes if you have time on your hands then why not pop in.   You will see all the exhibits within an hour, and that’s if you take your time, but the displays are nice and you get a feel for the marine environment of Malta.

  1. Looks cool, I’m not sure whether to pop in when I visit Malta as I’m a bit spoilt here with Sea Life London & Brighton which I visit usually once a year each. Love the new look of the site by the way! Looks brilliant 🙂

      1. Oh right, well it looks good as it is but look forward to seeing how it looks when it’s finished 🙂
