Pastizzi

These pastries come in two varieties: ricotta cheese or pea.  Not sure why these were the two finalists but there you go.  In your local pastizzeria you can find many other things stuffed inside pastry cases though, such as ham and cheese, hamburger, sausage (naturally), spinach or whatever you’re having yourself.  They are very cheap, and they taste good, although they are probably not the healthiest foodstuffs in the world.  Pastizzis are made from layers and layers of pastry and butter, and thus they are certainly not going to be found in the health food section of your local supermarket.(Recently, Malta came second in a survey of the most obese nations in the European Union.  Just saying).

Here are a couple of the other options available in your friendly neighbourhood pastizzeria:

This is called a ‘Wudy’:

Like a sausage roll, except the sausage is like a frankfurter, and has cheese in the middle of it.

And this delectable item is a Qassatat:

I tend to point rather than attempt the pronunciation of this one.  Your vegetarian option, stuffed with cheese or spinach or peas, and a couple of these will provide enough calories to keep you going for most of the day.

Of course you’ll also find a selection of pizza slices, but then I guess you know what those look like.

  1. I recently discovered pastizzi tal pizelli u bacon! Woohoo! take that, traditionalists! Jolly nice they were, too. We always bring back a suitcase full of frozen ones (and that isn’t too much of an exaggeration! We just leave a little room for the bigilla, olives etc.) Can’t beat pastizzi. Nom, nom.

  2. I had a chicken pastizzi today from the place at the bottom of Tower Road in Sliema. Best one I’ve tried, straight out of the oven.
