As with the Malta Top Ten list, this is a compilation of the views held by other people, books, bloggers, sites and so on, as well as my own.
There are a lot of things to do in the tiny city of Valletta, so I have narrowed it down to a Top 10 List for you to try:10. Fortification Interpretation Centre
A new attraction and not on a lot of lists, but I think worthy of a place on this one. This museum gives you a window into the history of the city, via the fortifications which have defended it (or tried to) over the centuries.
9. Museum of Archaeology or Malta Experience
Two choices for a rainy day (or an escape from the heat) The first is a small museum but worth popping in to take a look at the prehistoric ‘Sleeping Lady’ statuette. The second is a 45 minute film about Malta’s history, which by all accounts is pretty good.
8. Streetside Cafe
There are not too many cars in Valletta, and so taking a coffee in a pavement cafe is a nice way to pass some time. You will find plenty of venues from which to drink a beverage of your choice and do some people watching; from the larger restaurants near the Cathedral to tiny cafes located in the nooks and crannies of the city.
7. Casa Rocca Piccola
What I would refer to as a ‘stately home’, this sixteenth century palace is still used in part as a residence, but is open to the public as well.
6. Manoel Theatre/Open Air Theatre
Manoel is the third oldest active theatre in Europe, so if you are lucky you will be able to catch a show here. Otherwise buy klonopin online india just drop by and take the five euro tour. Now you will also have the option to see a performance in the new outdoor theatre which has been recently built near the gates of the city.
5. Lascaris War Rooms
To my mind this is an even better museum than the War Museum, but I’m trying not to let personal bias interfere with the quasi-democratic process at work here. Visit Lascaris and you find yourself beneath the city, in rooms hewn out of the rock to provide a safe base from which to organise the war efforts.
4. Grand Master’s Palace
Beautifully ornate tapestries adorn the walls in what was the home of the Grand Master of the Knights Hospitaller.
3. National War Museum
Much of Malta’s current identity was shaped by the second world war, and a visit to this museum will help to explain just why the whole country was awarded the George Cross by the king of England.
2. Upper Barrakka Gardens
This is a tranquil little piece of greenery, from where you have a great view of the harbour. And if you’re there at midday you will get to see the battery in action, as cannons are fired over the water.
1. St John’s Co-Cathedral
This is just about universally recognised as one of the must-see buildings on a trip to Valletta. The outside is pretty drab, but the interior is spectacular. Plus you get to see a couple of incredible paintings by Caravaggio. If you only make it to one place in Valletta, this is the one to go for.
…and if you manage to get through all of that in a day, why not reward yourself with a nourishing ale in The Pub.
